How Often Should I Get My Boiler Serviced?

WHY SHOULD I SERVICE MY BOILER?

Boiler servicing should be done annually to ensure that everything is firing on all cylinders, running efficiently and safely. A faulty boiler can be incredibly dangerous with 250 + hospitalisations per year as a result of non-fire-related carbon monoxide poisoning in England & Wales.

During your boiler service, a Gas Safe registered engineer will check for leaks and other possible issues, giving you peace of mind when it comes to protecting your family.

Minor problems can become worse if left unchecked so by ensuring your boiler is running properly, you will save money on future repairs.

Not getting an annual service may be a false economy as it will be checked to ensure it is working efficiently, which, in turn, will save you money over time; a more efficient boiler costs less to run. How efficient your boiler can be depends on its age and the type you have so your engineer can also advise you on the best model for you once your boiler needs replacing.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SERVICE YOUR BOILER?

Calling a Gas Engineer in the cold months is a risk. This is a Heating Engineer's busiest time and, if your boiler does need to be replaced or repaired, you maybe without heating and hot water for a time while this is done. In addition, Gas Safe Engineers are often booked up weeks in advance which will not be great news if there is a problem. Customers often state that they couldn't book a registered Gas Safe Engineer and so used an unlicensed person instead - this can have serious consequences and should never be done.

UNSERVICED BOILERS CAN CONTRAVINE WARRANTIES.

Many boiler warranties and insurance policies require you to complete a regular service to ensure your boiler is safe. An annual boiler service will meet most insurance policy requirements, though you’ll need to check with your insurance provider to be sure.

Whenever you choose to service your boiler, make sure to note the date and set a reminder to book the next one in, and always book a Gas Safe registered engineer.

LANDLORDS MUST HAVE AN ANNUAL SERVICE BY LAW.

A REGISTERED Gas Safe engineer must check all gas appliances such as boilers, stoves and fireplaces as well as flues, annually, to ensure everything is safe. If you’re a tenant it’s worth noting that landlords are not responsible for safety checks on gas appliances owned by yourself, or any flues that solely connect to your own gas appliances.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR HEATING ENGINEER IS QUALIFIED?

Check the Gas Safe register. Showing a gas safe logo or even a badge does not guarantee that the engineer or business has an up to date registration. Engineers must attend regular training to keep up to date and stay on the Gas Safe Register. So check their details before you book.
